Overview

The Development Department is the private fundraising arm of the Library and the Friends program oversees the majority of membership gifts raised by the larger department. Currently there are over 33,000 Friends in the program which will account for approximately $4.1MM in operating revenue.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Expand and grow NYPL’s individual annual giving program, including direct mail, special membership, and employer matching programs.
  • Develop and implement direct response strategies to attract, retain, service, cultivate and upgrade Library donors through new donor acquisition, renewal, reinstatement, special appeals, and acknowledgment efforts.
  • Work cooperatively with staff across Library to create strong donor benefits programs and to plan overall communications strategy to direct response donors.  
  • Prepare annual direct response and membership fundraising plans, with accompanying budgets and revenue goals in collaboration with the Director of Individual Giving and Major Gifts.
  • Provide strategic oversight to direct mail/response consultant.
  • Collaborate with Online Giving colleagues to implement online campaigns coordinated with direct mail efforts. This work should also specifically include the strategic development and growth of monthly giving and annual renewal donors.
  • Collaborate with the Development Events and Special Events team to develop membership events programs that engage donors and showcase the Library’s unique resources.
  • Collaborate with Planned Giving and Major Giving colleagues to fully integrate and maximize fundraising efforts for the entire individual giving continuum.

Managerial/ Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position has 3 direct reports: Associate Manager of Membership, Assistant Manager, Schomburg Society, and Development Associate as well as part-time volunteers

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 years of fundraising experience
  • Deep understanding of direct response programs
  • Knowledge of and experience with Direct Mail and Membership programs
  • Experience working in a large, complex organization
  • Experience managing and coaching staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing budgets and external vendors
  • Experience with donor stewardship and events
  • Deep knowledge of fundraising databases
