Overview

Career Services department  provides career counseling, resume help, college application and essay assistance, and much, much more. We specialize in serving job seekers, re-entry, students, mid-career changers, veterans, and 55+ adults throughout system wide libraries

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provides services to patrons who utilize SBLCS: Career Services
  • Reviews patrons’ resumes and cover letters and provides feedback; assist with the job search process including email setup; internet navigation; uploading and downloading and documents, etc.
  • Rehearses job interview tactics and offers suggestions
  • Assists with planning strategic career moves, helps to identify employment opportunities and guides clients who desire to make a career change.
  • Holds seminars and workshops to educate individuals who are searching for the right career path; must have flexible availability including evening, daytime, and Saturday hours, willing to travel  to various locations, as needed.
  • Trains on the use of library databases to assist with aptitude tests for determining patrons’ interests and talents.
  • Assists with job search skills, writing cover letters to prospective employers and completing job applications; as well as navigating on-line job searches, completing digital applications, and various social media platforms
  • Assists with identifying barriers, provides guidance about a variety of careers and effectively matching their choices, careers and education.
  • Assists with community outreach to promote and increase public participation and use of library services; ensures patrons follow library policies and procedures
  • Provides assistance throughout the library system; makes appropriate referrals internally and externally;   
  • Coordinates with Supervisor on programming, services and events for neighborhood branch libraries; facilitate weekly career related activities
  • Assists with the planning, delivering workshops and/or presentations, including printing workshop materials and agendas
  • Reviews, assesses, routes, answers and monitors follow up action steps on correspondence; gathers and analyzes statistical information required for annual reporting;
  • Performs additional duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree with combination of applied experience
  • Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
  • Demonstrated experience in Career Coaching
  • Ability to travel between various library locations
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology which includes assisting patrons with navigating on-line job searches, completing digital applications, and various social media platforms, including library databases;
  • Experience creating, conducting and/or participating in community training, programming and outreach
  • Ability to speak, read and write in a language other than English
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills are important.
  • Must be a good multi-tasker, scheduler, time manager and an active listener.
  • Must have excellent management and motivational skills.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of using spreadsheets and maintaining databases is a plus.
  • Knowledge of human resources and recruiting techniques.
