  • Overview

    The BNY Mellon Pre-Professional Program at the Schomburg Center offers paid part-time positions across several unique areas. The program helps college and graduate school students cultivate transferrable skills and gain professional experience rooted in a cultural institution. The duration of each position is typically one term. Each term candidates receive an orientation, on-the-job training, mentorship opportunities and workshops with leaders from the New York Public Library and greater New York City community. Participating students are eligible for college credit, but the conferral of credit is not a program requirement.


    This position is available in fall 2017 through mid-spring 2018, for approximately 17 weeks.


    Position – Administration Pre-Professional


    The Schomburg Center is looking for a highly organized, motivated college student to work part-time as a paid pre-professional focusing on administration. Reporting to a mentor/supervisor in the director’s suite, you will experience various facets of managing a preeminent cultural and research facility that is both a New York City landmark and part of the New York Public Library. You will also have opportunities to discuss your career goals and receive professional guidance.





    Principal Responsibilities

    • Support the Schomburg’s administrative, funding and external engagement functions
    • Assist with paper flow and data, archiving and digitizing director files
    • Help coordinate volunteer engagement and public access to Schomburg Center
    • Provide computer and as needed telephone support for public engagement
    • Liaise between Schomburg staff, NYPL staff and other community/government offices
    • Respond to questions regarding Schomburg programs and services
    • Fulfill other related duties as required

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Current enrollment in an accredited college degree program
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google applications a must
    • Social media skills a plus
    • Good communication skills, an eye for detail and a curiosity to learn new things
    • Interest in the arts, education, fund development, program management, and/or African-American and African Diaspora culture and history are desired
