Overview

The BNY Mellon Pre-Professional Program at the Schomburg Center offers paid part-time positions across several unique areas. The program helps college and graduate school students cultivate transferrable skills and gain professional experience rooted in a cultural institution. The duration of each position is typically one term. Each term candidates receive an orientation, on-the-job training, mentorship opportunities and workshops with leaders from the New York Public Library and greater New York City community. Participating students are eligible for college credit, but the conferral of credit is not a program requirement.

 

This position is available in fall 2017 through mid-spring 2018, for approximately 17 weeks.

 

Position – Education/Junior Scholars Pre-Professional

 

The Schomburg Center is looking for a highly organized, motivated college student to work part-time as a paid pre-professional focusing on youth education programs. Reporting the Education Program Coordinator, you will encounter opportunities to experience inquiry based learning, curriculum development, event planning, and to help shape young minds. You will also have opportunities to discuss your career goals and receive professional guidance.



 

 

 

Principal Responsibilities

  • Support the Schomburg’s high profile Junior Scholars Program
  • Assist with curriculum research and creation of program materials
  • Cultivate former students for a Junior Scholars Alumni event
  • Help coordinate academic and program training materials and setup
  • Assist with coordination and execution of Schomburg’s Black Comic Book Festival
  • Correspond with guest speakers and performers
  • Respond to questions regarding Schomburg education programs
  • Fulfill other related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited institution
  • Knowledge of Google docs and Excel
  • Good communication and research skills
  • Interest in education and youth programs a plus
