Overview

The BNY Mellon Pre-Professional Program at the Schomburg Center offers paid part-time positions across several unique areas. The program helps college and graduate school students cultivate transferrable skills and gain professional experience rooted in a cultural institution. The duration of each position is typically one term. Each term candidates receive an orientation, on-the-job training, mentorship opportunities and workshops with leaders from the New York Public Library and greater New York City community. Participating students are eligible for college credit, but the conferral of credit is not a program requirement.

 

This position is available in fall 2017 through mid-spring 2018, for approximately 17 weeks.

 

PositionLibrary Research Division Pre-Professional

 

The Schomburg Center is looking for a highly organized, motivated graduate student to work part-time as a paid Pre-Professional focusing on library reference services and research collections. Reporting to a librarian in the division, the Library Pre-Professional is responsible for a variety of tasks within the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Division.



 

 

Principal Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, answer reference questions and create research guides
  • Create inventory records in the catalog for unprocessed clippings in the library’s ILS system
  • Assist librarians with outreach activities including classes and exhibitions
  • Participate in collection maintenance activities including sorting and filing

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a graduate degree program at an accredited educational institution
  • Excellent research and writing skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Interest in library collections and research; Interest in African-American history
  • Library experience preferred
