The BNY Mellon Pre-Professional Program at the Schomburg Center offers paid part-time positions across several unique areas. The program helps college students cultivate transferrable skills and gain professional experience rooted in a cultural institution. The duration of each position is one term, renewable when possible. Each term candidates receive an orientation, on-the-job training, mentorship opportunities and workshops with leaders from the New York Public Library and greater New York City community. Participating students are eligible for college credit, but the conferral of credit is not a program requirement.


This position is available in fall 2017 through mid-spring 2018, for approximately 17 weeks.


Position - Public Programs Pre-Professional


The Schomburg Center is looking for a highly organized, motivated college student to work part-time as a paid pre-professional focusing on public programs. Reporting to a mentor/supervisor leading this area, you will have opportunities to interact with patrons, presenters, performers, scholars, writers, filmmakers, and others. Diverse public programming, special events, and related activities will foster lifelong professional aptitudes, including skills in time and relationships management as well as logistics administration. You will also have opportunities to discuss your career goals and receive professional guidance.


Principal Responsibilities

  • Helping to coordinate events setup
  • Fulfilling other related duties as required
  • Supporting event day production including guest check-in, backstage prep, etc.
  • Attention to detail, customer services, teamwork and judgment

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited institution
