Overview

The BNY Mellon Pre-Professional Program at the Schomburg Center offers paid part-time positions across several unique areas. The program helps college and graduate school students cultivate transferrable skills and gain professional experience rooted in a cultural institution. The duration of each position is typically one term. Each term candidates receive an orientation, on-the-job training, mentorship opportunities and workshops with leaders from the New York Public Library and greater New York City community. Participating students are eligible for college credit, but the conferral of credit is not a program requirement.

 

This position is available in fall 2017 through mid-spring 2018, for approximately 17 weeks.

 

The Schomburg Center is looking for a highly organized, motivated college student to work part-time as a paid Special Events Pre-Professional. Reporting to the Manger of Special Events, the Special Events Pre-Professional is responsible for a variety of tasks within the department, including, administrative and event support for this major research center and cultural institution. Through one-on-one meetings with a mentor/supervisor, you will have opportunities to discuss career goals and receive professional guidance.



 

Principal Responsibilities

  • Research intuitional event spaces to identify potential rental and revenue enhancement
  • Data management of rentals, vendors, payments, etc.
  • Support special events logistics and onsite events management
  • Liaise with events and operations teams on internal work orders
  • Assist with new social media strategies
  • Create promotional materials and generate ideas for future special events
  • Work with the special events team on innovative strategies to cultivate new clients
  • Lead client tours of Schomburg event space and provide prospect follow up

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • Microsoft Excel, Adobe Photo Shop Suite, (or other design program) desirable
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Extensive knowledge of social media, videography and/or photography a plus
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Interest in fundraising and client cultivation
