Overview

New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center (LPA) has been an essential provider of information, ideas, inspiration, and education for people worldwide for more than 50 years. The Library for the Performing Arts is a unique combination of scholarly research center and circulating public library housing one of the world's most extensive combinations of circulating, reference, and rare archival collections in its field.

 

Principal Responsibilities

 

 

Under the direction of the Associate Director, Exhibitions & Public Programs Administration:

 

  • Supervises a team of Preparators, including assisting in the selection, training, distribution of work assignments and performance management
  • Performs exhibition installations, including preparation (cutting mats, making frames, etc.), mounting or staging, and dismantling of materials
  • Oversees daily operation and maintenance of exhibition lighting
  • Makes daily rounds and performs repairs, maintenance and cleaning of exhibitions and museum facilities
  • Mounts graphics and positions artifacts as part of exhibition construction
  • Participates in exhibition development and exhibition hall design as needed
  • Receives and returns exhibition shipments
  • Responds to building and exhibition emergencies as needed
  • Performs related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • Substantial experience and skill in carpentry, reading and following blueprints, and the ability to assist in the construction of exhibitions as designed
  • Successfully demonstrated mechanical aptitude, knowledge of hand tools and machinery, materials, methods, practices and safety precautions, preferably in museum exhibition construction, installation, and crating for travel and maintenance
  • Demonstrated ability to work tactfully and effectively with staff, outside curators and public at all levels in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to set up and work from scissor lifts (up to 30' high), scaffold and ladders and lift heavy objects
  • Basic knowledge of electrical practice, electronics and mechanical installations for museums
  • Must be able to respond quickly and tactfully to emergency situations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of wood, knowledge of Plexiglas and substrate construction
  • Strong computer and related technology skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an art related field and relevant experience in museum or gallery work
  • Demonstrated knowledge of preservation practices
  • Knowledge of MS Access and Sketchup
  • Basic knowledge of museum lighting and standard practices

Physical Duties

  • Moderate physical effort is required, including bending, pushing, pulling and lifting
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs

Starting Salary

USD $43,254.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary (with 2 years of NYPL service)

USD $49,742.00/Yr.
