Overview

The BookOps Logistics Processing Department is primarily responsible for receiving and processing all new materials for 150 branches across 4 boroughs.  This volume is in the range of over 1 million items per year, all of which are new and in high demand and selected to meet the needs of the communities of New York. In the Processing Department we strive along with BookOps to receive and process these items within an average of two weeks or less, to meet street dates and maintain the quality of our libraries’ collections. This service level is a foundation of the Access pillar of the NYPL’s Strategic Priorities. Access is made possible through the full staffing and leveraging of this unit.  The unit also supports the physical logistics of countless projects aligned with Learning, Creating and Reading such as Summer Reading, Internet Lending, and other Innovation projects.

 

This position’s basic purpose is to receive and process all library materials in and accurately and timely manner. The individual works on interdependent teams to better manage the workflow of a high volume of in demand items for the 150 locations across the city. This position also supports special projects and high priority rush requests.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Prepares print and non-print library materials for circulation.
  • Able to meet high volume, daily production standards and deadlines.
  • Maintains processing standards to ensure accurate and prompt delivery of new materials to branches and units.
  • Receives materials in the system so invoice can be paid.
  • Ensures quality control for items in process just prior to their distribution.
  • Frequently moves book trucks and shelves materials according to specified criteria.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or high school equivalency certification.
  • Data entry knowledge.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in handling detailed work processes.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, reliability, punctuality and attention to detail.
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as the ability to work well independently in an organized manner.
  • Must be organized and able to work effectively in a fast paced production line atmosphere.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Must be a fast learner who can take direction well.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a high volume warehouse environment.

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
  • Must be able to push a loaded book cart
  • bending, stooping, and reaching
  • Extended time at computer as well as extended time on feet may be necessary
  • Must pass a physical examination
