Overview

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture located in Harlem, New York, is a research unit of The New York Public Library system. Recently named a National Historic Landmark, the Schomburg Center is recognized as one of the leading institutions focusing exclusively on African American, African Diaspora, and African experiences.

 

The Research and Reference Division is seeking a Library Technical Assistant III to provide excellent public service and oversee the back office operations.

 

 

This role is expected to end Spring 2020.

 

 

 

Principal Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Associate Chief Librarian, the Library Technical Assistant III performs the following duties:

 

  • Provides public service at the Information Service Desk:
    • Issues library cards and updates patron records in the Sierra Circulation system.
    • Instructs patrons in the use of microfilm reader/printers.
    • Assists the public with Internet and laptop reservations.
    • Assists patrons with the use of public computers and offer basic computer troubleshooting.
    • Provides staff-mediated copy services.
  • Provides administrative support including ordering office supplies, distributing mail,  maintaining office equipment.  
  • Manages the Public Vending machines and accounts.
  • Handles scanning and photocopy requests for remote patrons.
  • Assists with sending collection materials for preservation or conservation treatment.
  • Aids in the collection of statistical information for the production of departmental management reports.
  • Performs related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successfully demonstrated public service experience, excellent customer service skills, and ability to communicate effectively with library patrons and staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to show attention to detail.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills, and ability to work well under pressure and in a busy environment.
  • Reliability and flexibility.
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Google docs.
  • Ability to work evenings (until 8 pm) and Saturdays.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.

Starting Salary

USD $34,898.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary (with 2 years of NYPL service)

USD $40,133.00/Yr.

Hours

- 35 hours per week to be scheduled during branch hours
- Evenings and weekends as required
- Schedule subject to change
