NYPL Digital is the department responsible for the digital transformation of the Library in order to facilitate the successful transition to the delivery of core patron-facing services through digital platforms.


Success will be achieved by the development of an affordable, scalable and achievable long-term plan comprising Infrastructure, Policies, Processes and the management of an appropriately motivated and skilled workforce to guarantee digital Preservation, Discovery and Access to the materials, assets and other resources provided by the Library, to all patrons in accordance with its stated mission and values.

Principal Responsibilities

The Project Manager’s responsibilities are to plan, track, communicate and help deliver the projects to which are assigned.  They will manage projects drawing on methods from both Agile and traditional project management practice.  The Project Manager will serve as the liaison, facilitator and coordinator for the technical staff, the NYPL Digital product staff,  and other stakeholder groups.   They will also be expected to identify issues proactively, resolve conflicts, escalate if necessary, and work across the organization to execute the project.


You will manage one or more agile projects, typically to deliver a specific product or transformation via a multi-disciplinary, highly skilled digital team. You’ll be adept at delivering complex digital projects, breaking down barriers for your team, and both planning at a higher level and getting into the detail to make things happen when needed.


Defining project needs and feeding these into the program/portfolio process will enable resource to be appropriately allocated. You will be core to decisions that build high performing teams, where people are excited about the work they are undertaking. 


Responsibilities include:


  • Deliver projects and products using the appropriate agile project management methodology, learning & iterating frequently
  • Work with the Product Manager to define the roadmap for any given product and translate this into user stories
  • Lead the collaborative, dynamic planning process - prioritizing the work that needs to be done against the capacity and capability of the team
  • Create an environment that fosters the team’s productivity within the framework, using the organization’s related processes and standards
  • Ensure that all project team members understand their roles and responsibilities
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams in the development and successful completion of small through large-scale initiatives across the entire project lifecycle, including:


  • holding the daily team stand up
  • scheduling, participating in, and documenting the meetings
  • helping the product owners groom the backlog of product requests
  • identifying issues proactively that need resolution


  • Oversee the deliverables assigned to cross functional teams, vendors and business resources
  • Coordinate participation of different tech and stakeholder groups in requirements gathering, specifications, design, development and implementation of key projects
  • Develop and proactively manage project plans and strategy, scheduling, and identification of risks, contingency plans, and the allocation of available resources
  • Help estimate project resources and budget as well as manage costs
  • Keep all stakeholders informed of status and issues. Track and report key project metrics
  • Get the best out of people by giving enthusiastic and encouraging messages about priorities, objectives and expectations
  • Maintain effective performance in difficult and challenging circumstances, encouraging others to do the same
  • Be visible to staff and stakeholders and regularly undertake activities to engage and build trust with people involved in area of work

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-7 years experience as a PM in a technology services / digital media organization
  • Extensive experience with Agile methodology and Scrum
  • Solid experience in managing customer facing applications and services (technical lead experience not required)
  • Project managed medium to large software development or customer-facing initiatives
  • Experience managing vendor relationships and projects involving vendor selection and implementation
  • Leadership skills and enthusiastic can-do attitude
  • Relationship building and partnership skills
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills
  • Structured thinking and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent project management and time management skills
  • Self-starter, requiring minimal supervision (but not afraid to call for help)
  • Experience managing and rolling out multi-tiered or enterprise projects
  • Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior work with open source projects is a plus
  • PMI Certification is highly desirable
  • Experience in delivering digital projects and products
  • Proven experience using agile project management methods
  • Proven experience balancing multiple priorities 
  • Sound understanding of the digital landscape
  • Experience in matrix-managing multi-disciplinary teams
