The Bronx Library Center is the largest public library in the Bronx. This 6-floor, 78,000 square feet, majestic LEED certified building, is a dynamic, vibrant and well utilized center of access and learning in the Bronx. It is home to New York Public Library’s premiere Latino and Puerto Rican Heritage Collection, which features books in English and Spanish on the Latino experience.  The Bronx Library Center serves a diverse clientele with dominant populations of Hispanics and African Americans.


The New York Public Library is seeking a bright, dynamic, and enthusiastic Managing Librarian to provide leadership and direction to a team of public service professionals at the Bronx Library Center.  With over 700,000 patron visits per year, the Center offers a comprehensive service to all those who live, work and study in the vibrant Fordham neighborhood by offering patrons access to a wide range of books, information and knowledge.


The Bronx Library Center is open to the public Monday – Saturday 9 am to 9 pm and on Sundays 12 – 6 pm.  The Center houses dedicated departments (collections, services) for the following:  Adult, Reference, Children and a Teen Center.  Additionally, the Bronx Library Center has:

  • A Career Education & Information Service where job seekers can get assistance
  • Single Stop – government benefit counseling on Tuesdays & Thursdays 9-5
  • The largest Adult Learning Center in the New York Public Library where adults learn to write and non-English speakers learn English
  • A Young Adult Literacy program
  • A computer lab where a myriad of free computer classes are held each month
  • Bridge-Up Hub
  • A 150-seat auditorium where cultural/literary presentations are held every Saturday
  • Multiple conference rooms

We are currently seeking a Supervising Librarian who is responsible for the overall administration of the Teen Services Department at the Bronx Library Center, including public service, community outreach, program planning, collection development, and the supervision, training and evaluation of staff.  

Principal Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Chief Librarian of the Bronx Library Center, the Teen Services Supervising Librarian:

  • Supervises all aspects of service within the Teen Services Department
  • Monitors and develops strategies to increase teen circulation, program attendance and visitors in the Bronx Library Center
  • Provides reference service and instruction to library patrons of all ages using print, media and computer resources
  • Answers questions from the public in person, over the telephone and electronically
  • Instructs patrons on the use of the Internet, computer applications and other Library services
  • Performs community outreach to community organizations and schools to promote and increase public participation and use of library services
  • Plans and delivers library programs for teens
  • Supervises and trains staff in all aspects of Teen Services
  • Resolves patron complaints and staff performance issues
  • Ensures patrons follow library policies and procedures
  • Maintains the Print and non-Print collections in the Teen Services Department, including collection recommendations and deselection of library materials
  • Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of library science and teen services
  • Attends Community Board meetings as needed
  • May be responsible for the facility, staff and operations of the Bronx Library Center in the absence of the Managing Librarian

Minimum Qualifications

  • MLS from an accredited graduate school of Library Science and eighteen months of successfully demonstrated experience at a senior level Librarian in a public library or similar setting
  • Successfully demonstrated commitment to providing consistent, high-quality public services
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills
  • Successful track record of demonstrating creativity, flexibility, and initiative in accommodating community and staff needs
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to plan and deliver a diverse program of activities
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and conducting community outreach
  • Successfully demonstrated problem solving skills and the ability to exercise good judgment
  • Successfully demonstrated experience supervising, training, and mentoring staff
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate staff and coordinate teen services in a large hub
  • Demonstrated collection development experience
  • Knowledge of literature and materials for teens
  • Demonstrated experience with computer services including on-line searching and library databases
  • Excellent computer skills, including Millenium and Microsoft Office programs

Starting Salary

USD $58,715.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary (with 2 years of NYPL service)

USD $64,198.00/Yr.


35 hours per week to be scheduled during branch hours
Evenings and weekends as required
