The Communications & Marketing Department is responsible for advancing the Library’s mission and image through the promotion of its services, programs, events, exhibitions, and collections to a wide range of audiences and communities. Leveraging both traditional and digital communications, the Department positions the library as a cultural and educational leader in New York City and around the world.


The Editor on the Creative Services team is responsible for project managing, editing, and writing clear, concise, and compelling copy for an array of audiences, including current and potential users, Library staff, donors, Trustees, and other stakeholders. He/she is responsible for overseeing and/or contributing to the production of a variety of materials and platforms, such as print and digital publications, marketing collateral of all forms, signage and other visitor experience materials, and the Library’s website. The Editor will be a critical part of the Creative Services team ensuring messaging and branding are consistent across all medium and that high quality communication projects are produced in a timely manner.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of the timely production of Library publications, from scheduling and content development to design, approvals, production, distribution, and promotion.
  • Develops and manages materials for annual campaigns and promotions.
  • Develops and manages content and collateral for key Library programs and events.
  • Develops and fact-checks signage, guides, and other Visitor Experience materials for branches and the three other research centers, as needed.
  • Writes, edits, copyedits, and proofreads a variety of other materials as needed for departments and initiatives across the Library
  • Represents the Creative Services team at internal meetings; evaluates project requests and develops creative solutions
  • Maintains high standards of service excellence both within Communications and for other Library clients
  • Other responsibilities as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA required in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field
  • 3+ years work experience in marketing, publishing, journalism, corporate communications or related area with hands-on responsibility for developing, writing, editing, and project managing print and/or online publications
  • Excellent writing, research, and reporting/interviewing skills, and the ability to line edit, copy edit, and proofread content for clarity, consistency, accuracy and style; excellent writing, research, and reporting/interviewing skills
  • Proven ability to communicate complex topics and tailor writing style to various audiences
  • Ability to comprehend communications strategy and offer solutions and unique creative concepts that support goals and objectives
  • Ability to thrive well in a fast-paced team environment with a proactive approach and a highly responsive work style
  • Ability to collaborate with designers and other stakeholders and to project manage publications and collateral to meet tight deadlines
  • Strong presentation, organizational, and interpersonal skills; highly professional
  • Additional desirable experience and skills include: marketing and copywriting experience, experience working with graphic designers and production staff
  • Familiarity with InCopy and other desktop publishing programs or content management systems is a plus

Work Environment

Office environment, with regular off site travel to NYPL’s 92 locations, or to other relevant New York City destinations.
