Overview

The Strategic Research & Analytics team is The New York Public Library’s central node of information and insights about its users, usage, and impact. We support decision makers and program staff across the institution through business intelligence, impact assessment, strategic conversations, user research, and data mentorship.

 

We are seeking a talented QUANTITATIVE DATA ANALYST to join us in articulating the Library’s role in the intellectual, cultural, and educational lives of its local and global users; identifying opportunities for innovation and leadership in our research centers, neighborhood branches, and digital properties; and advocating for the needs of our communities.

 

In this role, you’ll draw on your analytical skills and experience working with large data sets to translate programmatic and operational questions into quantitative research plans - and then into actionable answers. But you won’t just wait for the questions to come to you - you’ll also combine your innate curiosity with our existing knowledge base to proactively identify hypotheses for further analysis, leveraging available data and creating new data streams and structures to pursue high-impact research.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Leveraging a broad toolkit of analytical and statistical techniques to conduct end-to-end data analysis (including data gathering/extraction, quality control/processing, analysis, and presentation of findings), transforming raw data into insights and recommendations
  • Improving processes, systems, and tools for data gathering, analysis, and dissemination
  • Consulting with programmatic and operational partners to define and implement core success metrics and targets to optimize performance, and developing analytical strategies to meet their informational needs
  • Building and maintaining cross-team reporting solutions (including dashboards and data visualizations) to monitor trends and identify contributors to change
  • Informing planning and innovation with evidence-based decision support, including building forecasting models and segmentations, uncovering insights about individual- and community-level patterns of usage, and identifying strategic opportunities for resource investment
  • Developing quantitative measures of institutional impact, transforming your advanced analysis into clear, compelling stories for internal and external stakeholders and evaluating the success of pilot programs
  • Driving change and building institutional appetite for data by communicating findings to - and sharing best practices with - a variety of audiences

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of hands-on professional experience in data/business analytics, working with large/complex data sets
  • Demonstrated experience using statistical, analytical, and visualization skills to generate insights, and presenting recommendations to clients (internal or external)
  • Familiarity with core statistical techniques such as significance testing, correlation, regression, distributions, factor and cluster  analysis, and basic predictive modeling
  • Proficiency in relational database concepts, languages, and design (e.g. SQL), including writing complex SQL queries in a high-volume database environment
  • Proficiency in manipulating data sets using statistical software and/or scripting languages (e.g. R, SAS, SPSS, Python, Perl) or equivalent tools
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google apps suites
  • A meticulous worker, with the patience to carefully document your deliverables and build all models as if they will need to be shared
  • An inherently inquisitive mind passionate about extracting the maximum meaning from any data set, and enriching the “what” with insights about the potential “why”
  • Ability to independently produce high-standard, presentation-ready deliverables
  • Ability to clearly and persuasively communicate analytical insights and methodologies verbally, visually, and in writing to employees at all levels of the organization (from senior management to front-line staff)
  • Demonstrated successful experience working collaboratively and effectively and establishing trusting relationships within a diverse organization, across multiple levels of management and staff
