The NYPL is building a large-scale OST presence throughout its three boroughs, where we serve approximately 20,000 children and youth every day. To serve this group, we are building a team of talented, committed and enthusiastic educators who recognize the NYPL’s role in enriching the lives of the young people we serve.
Now entering the second year of OST programming, we are currently hiring five Lead Tutors (hourly staff) for our NYPL BridgeUp program. BridgeUp chooses small cohorts of students in the 8th grade and provides academic, college prep, life skills and other services through the 12th grade with the goal of graduating these students with the “21st Century skills” essential to thriving in college and career.
This year, BridgeUp will admit a new class of 8th grade students from nearby middle schools in underserved communities to join our continuing 9th graders at one of five NYPL BridgeUp sites. Each site is managed by a Helen Gurley Brown Education Fellow who serves as a mentor, educator, and skill builder to participants. Supervised by the HGB Education Fellow, the Lead Tutor will assist in creating and implementing academic lessons and project-based learning activities that are of high interest and relevance to the students served.
Program activities are made possible through the institutional resources of the New York Public Library and the financial support of the Helen Gurley Brown Foundation
Reporting to the HGB Education Fellow, the Lead Tutor will:
Manage and advise our college student Tutors, providing weekly check-ins to discuss any student or tutor related issues or concerns;
Collaborate with BridgeUp staff to develop and teach mini-lessons that enhance students’ understanding of basic core concepts across disciplines;
Meet with the HGB Education Fellow to discuss student progress, resource needs, planning, etc.
Provide insight into academic needs of students and suggest strategies for addressing areas of student concern (i.e., learning, classroom behavior, etc.).
Develop positive relationships with students that foster their academic and personal growth.
Work one-on-one or in small groups with students to provide them with academic tutoring to improve their understanding of math, reading, social studies and/or science, at all levels.
Use best practices when tutoring students and managing classroom.
Monitor students and maintain a safe learning environment during program activities.
Attend required meetings and trainings.
Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s degree in Education preferred
Possess a concrete understanding of basic concepts in middle and high school Math, Science, Reading/Writing, History, and Foreign Language
Experience teaching and/or tutoring in multiple subject areas
Working knowledge of NYC Department of Education Common Core Learning Standards preferred
Experience with enhancing 21st Century Skills and Project Based Learning activities preferred
Experience in youth development
Ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and wear many different hats.
