The New York Public Library is one of the world’s great public research libraries. Its four research centers provide opportunities for engagement with in-depth and unique collections, inspirational reading rooms, exhibitions, programs, and a range of research services. The Collections and Research Services Department is responsible for establishing a unified strategic vision for NYPL’s Research Collections, including aligning budget resources to support and enhance collecting priorities; formulating and implementing a clear, responsible collection management and preservation plan for the lifecycle of all research collection material; and coordinating the development and assessment of research services and systems that position the Library as a vital resource to support learning, creativity, scholarship, and enterprise.


The Collections and Services Analyst will contribute to promoting and supporting a culture of assessment and a data driven approach to planning and achieving strategic objectives in these areas. The position will work in partnership with leadership staff within the department as well as with staff across the Library to document the value and impact of NYPL’s Research Libraries.  


Principal Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements quantitative and qualitative methods for evaluating collection usage, budgets, acquisitions, storage, and preservation to support Collection and Research Services, and Research Libraries initiatives
  • Manages the gathering and analysis of all research collections usage data, including physical, e-resources, and digital collections
  • Primary coordinator of research data collection and analysis; works closely with Strategic Research and Analytics dept and BookOpsBookOps staff; serves as liaison to external reporting agencies, such as the Association for Research Libraries (ARLARL), HathiTrust, etc.
  • Conducts research to support new strategic  initiatives in collections and research services, and documents progress for ongoing projects
  • Communicates analyses with stakeholders throughout the Library through effective written reports, data visualizations, and presentations
  • Supports research libraries strategic initiatives by developing appropriate methodologies to track and analyze programmatic objectives and impact
  • Documents progress and commitments in collaborative collection development initiatives; assists in the planning and development of a knowledge database for collaborative agreements
  • Supports the Assistant Director for Research Service and others in user testing and the Assistant Director for Collection Development in preparing and analyzing monthly expenditure reports, including analysis of individual vendors
  • Collaborates with other departments in the gathering and analysis of e-resource usage data and analyzing digital collection usage
  • Develops training sessions on the use of tools and methods in gathering program and collection data 
  • Pulls data and prepares acquisitions reports on endowment funds for Development staff
  • Supports the preparation of reports on grants and other externally funded initiatives
  • Supports the department in collection management space planning through analysis of collection growth projections

Managerial/ Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Learning how to pull and evaluate circulation data from across the Research libraries and prepare accurate, detailed analyses by subject, language and date of publication
  • Evaluating annual collections growth in order to determine shelving needs, especially for ReCAP capacity planning
  • Analyzes trends in research collection development in light of national trends
  • Determining appropriate presentation of data given the audience and goal of the presentation

Additional skills/competencies:


  • Strong analytical and statistical analysis skills
  • Advanced facility with MS Excel and presentation software
  • Familiarity with ILS module reports and budget data.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience in data assessment and analysis.
  • At least three years of relevant work experience in a library setting.
  • Successfully demonstrated experience with assessment projects and analyzing data.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current practices and trends in research libraries, especially in the areas of collection development, digital initiatives, and trends in scholarly communication and publishing.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and the ability to handle detail-oriented work
  • Successfully demonstrated experience in the areas of project or resource management, problem-solving and decision-making in a collaborative and coordinated work environment
  • Successfully demonstrated experience meeting deadlines
  • Successfully demonstrated commitment to excellence in public service
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with staff across departments

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or advanced degree in relevant analytical discipline preferred.
