Overview

The mission of the New York Public Library (NYPL) is to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities.  To deliver on this promise, we provide free access to physical and electronic resources in neighborhoods throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. 

 

The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Library provides talking books and magazines and braille for people who are blind, visually impaired, or are otherwise physically unable to read standard print. The library serves residents who live in New York City and Long Island.

 

Principal Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Borough Operations Manager:

  • Operates and maintains the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Library
  • Makes daily inspections of the premises and closely liaises with the Chief Librarian and other building staff.
  • Reports work progress, physical problems, repairs status, etc.
  • Develops, implements and monitors a complete preventative maintenance program.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies for maintenance and cleaning.
  • Liaises with outside contractors and inspectors as needed.
  • Supervises Library Custodian and other cleaning staff
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Will be required to work overtime as needed.  
  • May be assigned to perform related duties at other facilities.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or it's equivalent, college degree preferred
  • Successful completion of advanced courses in plumbing and/or electrical skills and substantial successfully demonstrated experience in the operation and maintenance of large scale heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to read electrical, mechanical and control wiring diagrams.
  • Experience implementing and/or following a preventive maintenance program.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to maintain logs and prepare written reports.
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to give clear verbal instructions and prepare clear written instructions, memorandums and vendor specifications.
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to deal tactfully with staff and public.
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial cleaning methods and materials.
  • Good computer skills and demonstrated experience in the operation of computerized building systems, HVAC controls and lighting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work from high ladders and scaffolds and to perform heavy lifting.
  • Must pass physical examination.
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • NYC Sprinkler and Standpipe certificates preferred.

  • Moderate physical effort is required, including building walk thorugh, bending, pushing, pulling and lifting
