Overview

NYPL’s neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island—many of which date to Andrew Carnegie’s visionary philanthropy at the turn of the 20th century—are being transformed into true centers of educational innovation and service, and vital community hubs that provide far more than just free books and materials.  

 

NYPL is seeking a Supervising Library Maintainer to lead a small team and provide a full range of repair and maintainance services.  

Principal Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Branch Operations Manager:

  • Supervises the activities of crews engaged in carpentry, masonry, locksmithing, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC and other general maintenance work.
  • Works hands on in the areas of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and locksmithing within the Bronx Borough.
  • Monitors and approves time, using the Library’s etime system, for maintenance staff.
  • Prioritizes assigns and tracks work orders.
  • Makes daily rounds and inspects sites, and makes recommendations for modifications, construction, and repairs.
  • Maintains inventory and orders materials.
  • Recommends personnel actions and reviews vacation schedules.
  • Prepares daily and monthly reports.
  • Must be able to respond quickly and tactfully to emergency situations.
  • Attends meetings for Capital Planning and Special Events, as needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent supplemented by successful completion of appropriate trade or vocational courses.
  • Successfully demonstrated experience with general maintenance repairs including carpentry, locks, electric, and plumbing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of established practices and procedures for operating building equipment, including the ability to resolve mechanical equipment problems in emergency situations.
  • Successfully demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining work schedules for staff.
  • Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to work well with staff at all levels. 
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to prepare and work from sketches.
  • Successfully demonstrated computer skills including ability to generate reports and process work orders using a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Valid drivers license with good driving record.
  • Must pass pre employment physical.

Starting Salary

USD $55,294.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary (with 2 years of NYPL service)

USD $63,589.00/Yr.

Hours

40 hours per weekTue - Fri 10:00AM - 6:30PM and Sat 7:00AM - 3:30PMSchedule subject to change
