The Adult Learning Centers help adult students improve their communication skills in English (ESOL and basic literacy). We offer two types of programming, available at more than 40 libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.


There are series-based classes, held year-round in 10-week cycles. Most classes meet two days each week, for two hours each day. Select classes meet on Saturday mornings for four hours. Classes are for beginner, intermediate, and advanced level students. Students must attend an information session to register for classes, and registration is required in order to attend these classes.

There are also drop-in informal classes for intermediate and advanced level English learners who want to practice their conversation skills, as well as beginner and intermediate level classes for those preparing to take the United States Citizenship exam. 


Currently we are seeking to hire ESOL instructors to teach and assist with our classes at 5 locations in the Bronx and 2 in Staten Island and 2 at Riker's Island. 

Principal Responsibilities


The main responsibilities for the instructor are to work with ESOL Specialist III and the ESOL Site Advisor to implement the goals and activities of the adult education program.  To teach and assist adult ESOL students in improving their English skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing).  To instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals. To assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL.  NYS TESOL certification preferred.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with adults.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations.
  • Complete pre-service training prior to assignment
  • Instruct assigned English classes for 2 ½ hour sessions, twice a week in 10 week cycles
  • Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each session/class based on student needs/interests, and the prescribed curriculum.
  • Administer standardized assessments
  • Assist with the intake registration and placement of new students
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and personal information. 
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning instructional software, video, audio and distance learning preferred.
  • Multilingual candidates preferred (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic,  preferred)

Minimum Salary (with 2 years of NYPL service)

USD $45.00/Hr.


The ESOL Instructor will support 2-hour class sessions, twice a week in 10 week cycles.  Continuation of this position is subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of grant funds.
