Overview

BookOps is a shared library technical services organization that serves the Brooklyn Public Library and the New York Public Library. The BookOps Selection department  acquires library materials in all formats for children, teens, adults and world language users in accordance with the strategic goals and initiatives of New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library.

Principal Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Selection the World Languages Coordinator:

  • Leads a team which acquires, develops and manages world language collections for the BookOps member libraries.
  • Coordinates and manages the development of the BookOps member libraries’ world language collections.
  • Works to develop collections that reflect the changing needs of communities served by these collections.
  • Investigates, negotiates, and works closely with world language publishers, vendors and service providers to achieve BookOps member library collection offerings that provide the best possible patron experience.
  • Collaborates with peers at other libraries to stay abreast of trends and developments.
  • Oversees the allocated budgets for world language materials.
  • Contributes to collection development policies and guidelines aligned with the overall collections strategy of each BookOps member library.
  • Works collaboratively with BookOps member library collection liaisons and site managers to identify and assess collection needs of local populations, including multicultural groups and immigrant communities, and supports branch collection management activities.  
  • Promotes and interprets the collections through the use of online tools, classroom instruction, exhibitions and publications; and upon request provides consultative information to staff of member libraries’ Marketing, Public Relations, Exhibitions, and similar departments .
  • Works closely with BookOps Acquisitions in such areas as managing autoship plans and vendor relations.
  • Participates in ongoing collection assessment and circulation analysis. Serves on relevant committees.
  • Maintains a personal program of continuous education and professional development and assists other staff members in developing such programs for themselves.   
  • Performs related duties as required.

Managerial/ Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise one full time Supervising Librarian and share a Supervising Librarian position with the Adult selection team.

  • Work collaboratively with BookOps member library collection liaisons and site managers to identify and assess collection needs of local populations, including multicultural groups and immigrant communities, and supports branch collection management activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies.
  • 3 years relevant library work experience.
  • Knowledge of current practices and trends in collection management and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and supervise staff and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with world language publishers, vendors and service providers.
  • Ability to read or speak a language other than English (Chinese, Russian and Spanish)
