  • Overview

    Mid-Manhattan Library will be home to the innovative flagship teen library of NYPL, offering a wide variety of resources, from instruction in digital media production to mentoring and empowering our teen patrons so that they may engage with the world around them in new and creative ways. Operations of this flagship teen library will need a team of talented, creative, enthusiastic, and committed individuals who are passionate about enriching the lives of young adults.

     

    This position will predominantly focus on facilitating digital media instruction to teen patrons from all over the city in the new Mid-Manhattan Library. Candidates should demonstrate the capacity to thrive in high-energy spaces and have a sense of humor and imagination. Candidates with a strong audio/music production background are preferred.

    Principal Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Managing Librarian, the Digital Media Instructor:

    • Plans and delivers digital media instruction and workshops for teens including but not limited to pre- and post- production aspects
    • Learns and takes interest in informal learning environments and project-based learning
    • Provides point of need instruction for young adult patrons on media production in multiple mediums, internet usage, computer applications, and other Library services
    • Assembles, operates, and maintains technical hardware and software and troubleshoots routine technical issues when they arise
    • Provides input on collection development
    • Provides recommendations for maintenance to related technical equipment
    • Provides mentorship to young adult patrons and fosters a positive and engaging environment
    • Embraces creative solutions and thrives in a fast-paced environment
    • In the absence of the senior librarian, substitutes for workshops and programs
    • Performs other related duties as required
    • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience working in a media production related field.  
    • Must have prior experience in customer service and experience working with teens/young adults.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Proficiency in technologies such as music production (Logic, Pro Tools), video production (Final Cut, Premiere Pro), graphic design (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), photography, game design, fashion design, and makerspace activities, with an emphasis in music/sound production. Competencies in more than one discipline is preferred.
    • Demonstrated competency in completing multimedia projects, from pre- to post-production.
    • Knowledge of current trends in hardware and software for media production
    • Experience or enthusiasm for teaching digital media or in a related technological field
    • Experience or interest in project-based learning and informal education
    • Commitment to inclusion, diversity, and creating a safe and welcoming environment for teens, especially among teens and young adults, to facilitate unique and informal learning
    • Knowledge or interest in trends in resources for teen patrons.
    • Strong computer and other related technology skills, including Microsoft Office and demonstrated experience using social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
    • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
    • Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
    • Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience creating, conducting and/or participating in community training, programming and outreach preferred, especially in large urban areas
    • Demonstrated knowledge of fine and performing arts in such areas as musical composition, painting, sculpture, animation, cinema, theater, creative writing, and/or other areas preferred.
