    The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is one of the world's leading research facilities devoted to the preservation of materials on the global African and African diasporan experiences. A focal point of Harlem's cultural life, the Center also functions as the national research library in the field, providing free access to its wide-ranging collections, programs and events that illuminate and illustrate the richness of black history and culture.

     

    A Page position is meant to give you knowledge about what it means to work within a library system. You will have access to a wealth of knowledge and experience which will allow you to decide if the library is where you want to begin your career. We are looking for candidates that demonstrate a strong work ethic, are reliable and possess excellent written and verbal communications skills to support the functions of the Administration Division. You will be expected to be an ambassador for the library, so a friendly demeanor goes a long way.

     

    The library page position is scheduled for 19 hours per week, including evenings and Saturdays.  Schedules are variable based on library needs and may be subject to change.

    Principal Responsibilities

    Under the direction of a Page supervisor, the Library Page will:

    • Support the Schomburg Center’s administrative and external engagement functions
    • Assist with filing, paper flow and data, archiving and digitizing director files
    • Provide computer and as needed telephone support
    • Liaise between Schomburg staff, NYPL staff and other community/government offices
    • Respond to questions regarding Schomburg programs and services
    • Maintain and organize mail room and supply closet
    • Photocopying and messenger work
    • Assist with library programs and outreach initiatives
    • Navigates customer interactions and escalates issues to the manager
    • Perform other related duties as required

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Current enrollment in an approved degree program at an accredited school
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow detailed instruction in a fast-paced environment
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications a must
    • Ability to accurately and efficiently sort and arrange items in alphanumeric order
    • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with a diverse patronage
    • Superb interpersonal and communication skills
    • Strong problem-solving skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and on independent projects
    • Demonstrated reliability and professionalism
    • Demonstrated flexibility

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ability to troubleshoot basic computer and printer issues preferred

    • Moderate lifting required (up to 25 lbs)
    • Pushing book trucks consisting of supplies and/or boxes
