  • Overview

    NYPL Digital is the department responsible for the digital transformation of the Library in order to facilitate the successful transition to the delivery of core patron-facing services through digital platforms.


    Success will be achieved by the development of an affordable, scalable and achievable long-term plan comprising Infrastructure, Policies, Processes and the management of an appropriately motivated and skilled workforce to guarantee digital Preservation, Discovery and Access to the materials, assets and other resources provided by the Library, to all patrons in accordance with its stated mission and values.


    As our Multi-Platform Applications Product Manager, you’ll help reshape the world of library lending and e-books to help build innovative discovery, data, and platform solutions and our SimplyE and Open eBooks mobile and web applications. Working with NYPL and coordinating scope and needs of national libraries, you’ll be building a robust application that helps communities and libraries far beyond NYC.  Working at the main NYPL branch location (of Ghostbusters fame), you'll experience the pleasure of working full-time on this open-source product while enjoying a healthy work-life balance.

    Reporting to the Director, Digital Products (DDP), you will work with stakeholders, designers, and the engineering team to define scope, negotiate product delivery timelines, establish product priorities and long-term goals, drive timely launches, and communicate to different teams including library stakeholders and users.

    The Multi-Platform Applications Product Manager is accountable for:

    • Delivering a product roadmap for the SimplyE Mobile App, while balancing multi-library needs, as well as the challenges that come from multi-platform products
    • Work with the UX team to develop a more robust and engaging application
    • Developing of measures of success and KPIs for the product, including app store ratings
    • Ensure parity between Android and iOS systems, as well as best-in-class Accessibility — to make ensure we are serving all populations

    Principal Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Director of Digital Products, the Multi-Platform Applications Product Maanger will:

    • Define digital projects across the Library
    • Develop product requirements and roadmaps
    • Work with senior leadership to define budgets and grants for products
    • Conduct market analysis and competitive analysis to understand the current landscape
    • Work with patrons, librarians, and curators, to understand the needs of all user types across the library
    • Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders, lead product managers and engineering teams to build products for library patrons and staff.  Identify and remove roadblocks to keep a project running smoothly
    • Translate broad business and user needs into non-ambiguous requirements and product user stories for our development teams
    • Responsible for meeting proposed KPIs
    • Facilitate on-going conversations with stakeholders, keep them informed on product progress, and define new business needs
    • Manage multiple digital products in multiple departments

    Minimum Qualifications

    • 7+ years experience as a Product Manager in a technology services/digital media organization
    • Bachelor’s degree in technology, business or related field
    • Demonstrable leadership skills
    • Portfolio of launched products either in a technology organization, media organization, or digital commerce organization
    • Demonstrable ability to work on a deadline and be decisive about product scope, goals, user needs and resources, in order to meet product releases
    • Data driven with strong analytical capability, able to define measurements of success and impact of a product
    • Organized, focused, extremely detailed oriented and adept at prioritization
    • Thoughtful problem solver, and a demonstrable ability to negotiate many stakeholder needs
    • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple technical and non-technical teams to develop goals and then aggressively pursue them with minimal supervision
    • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and users
    • Mature, empathetic, enthusiastic, and adaptable in large collaborative environments

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Advanced degree preferred in Computer Science or technology related field, Business, Psychology, or Library Science preferred
    • Preferred experience:
      • UX design
      • Information architecture
      • Open source communities
      • Vendor management
      • Project management
