  • Overview

    NYPL Digital is the department responsible for the digital transformation of the Library in order to facilitate the successful transition to the delivery of core patron-facing services through digital platforms.


    As an Interaction Designer, you will be working on a project for up to three years to help meet internal and external user needs by designing solutions that are both elegant and feasible, and be involved in projects from concept to launch, working with the Product team, the Software Engineering team, senior UX team members and partners across the Library.

    Principal Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Director of User Experience and Design the Interaction Designer will:

    • Analyze business needs and produce detailed wireframes that meet strategic objectives
    • Optimize information architecture to promote usability, while accommodating technical needs/constraints
    • Translate functional objectives into detailed specifications to ensure rapid development of projects
    • Develop user flows to facilitate the design process of features, templates and tools
    • Develop final wireframes, templates, modules, and functional specs used by Software Engineering and QA
    • Create prototypes for and actively participate in user testing to explore and validate solutions
    • Independently deliver on projects and work with others on teams
    • Serve as an advocate for our patrons and users, keeping their needs at the heart of our digital products

    Required Education & Experience

    • BFA or BA in related field, graduate design degree preferred
    • 2+ years experience, preferably within a publishing or agency setting

    Minimum Qualifications


    • Strong grasp of UI, HCI and UX principles
    • Experience in information architecture, user and screen flows, conceptual and detailed wireframing, and prototyping tools
    • Experience working with Design Systems
    • Experience working with Agile
    • Expertise with Sketch
    • Fluency in best practices for mobile and web-based design
    • Solid communication and interpersonal skills
    • A strong portfolio that demonstrates your experience and UX skills, illustrating step-by-step solutions to project requirements

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Coding/Scripting knowledge for light development and prototyping a plus
