  • Overview

    The Media Relations Department strategically promotes the services, staff, and initiatives of The New York Public Library via earned media outlets. These mentions are critical to raising overall awareness of the Library, which can affect attendance, library card sign ups, donations, and government support. Media Relations - currently a team of five - services the entire organization.

     

     

    The publicist would work with earned media outlets to promote a suite of Library offerings (with an expectation to deliver hundreds of placements throughout the year) to users of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The publicist would pitch stories that help attract new Library users, especially those who do not speak English, live in underserved communities, or are unfamiliar with the range of the Library's offerings. 

    Principal Responsibilities

    • Develop relationships with reporters and earned media outlets
    • Work with staff across the organization to develop story ideas that support the strategic priorities of the library
    • Aggressively and proactively pitch stories to media, securing hundreds of placements (specific goals will be developed with the publicist)
    • Handle all media around branches in the Bronx
    • Attend select library events and community meetings (galas, evening programs)
    • Develop plans for unveiling major news (which outlets, what is the timing, coordinating with other departments, exclusivity, etc)
    • Prioritize a multitude of projects to assure maximum efficiency and maximum positive press coverage for the Library

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • At least one year in public relations, journalism, or a related field
    • Knowledge of and relationships with NYC media outlets / reporters
    • Proven success promoting initiatives, events, institutions, or other clients
    • Strong writing skills
    • Ability to multi-task and perform under pressure
    • Creative thinker
    • Proactive and aggressive in terms of pitching press

    Preferred Qualifications

    Proficient in language other than English

    Work Environment

    Office environment, with regular off site travel to NYPL’s 92 locations, or to other relevant New York City destinations.
