  • Overview

    One of the most important education initiatives of the New York Public Library is the MyLibraryNYC program, launched in September 2011. This innovative school-library partnership between the NYC Department of Education, the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queens Library, offers public schools unparalleled access to the resources of the city's public library systems.


    Benefits of participation include: enhanced fine-free library borrowing for students and teachers; professional development for teachers aligned with Common Core learning standards; and school delivery of ‘Teacher Sets’ - library materials curated to supplement and enhance classroom curricular needs. In addition, teachers and students benefit and have access to all library electronic resources such as research databases and ebooks. Now serving over 500+ schools citywide, including 280+ schools in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, the program continues to expand in scope and size.


    Principal Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Manager of School Outreach, the Outreach Librarian will:


    • Promote the MyLibraryNYC program to participating schools by conducting outreach visits, distributing promotional materials, organizing events and otherwise becoming familiar with school personnel in order to position the NYPL as a valuable teaching and learning resource

    • Provide training to participating school librarians and teachers in finding materials, ordering teacher sets and utilizing databases that supplement their teaching

    • Provide ongoing customer service to school librarians and teachers to help them find appropriate materials, including how to retrieve individual items from their local branch or have teacher sets delivered to their school

    • In conjunction with DOE personnel, provide professional development to school librarians and teachers on best practices in selecting appropriate collections and using them to build skills under the Common Core Learning Standards

    • In conjunction with school librarians and teachers, work with students to facilitate usage of their special library cards to find books in their local NYPL branch and use program databases to help improve the level and quality of their reading and school work

    • Serve as school liaison to the NYPL Logistics and Collections Development teams to help ensure the ongoing improvement of the program’s teacher set delivery and resource building components

    • Assist on various special projects as needed

    • Perform related duties as required

    Minimum Qualifications

    • ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies and Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York
    • Strong commitment to public service and the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
    • Demonstrated experience providing library services to teachers or other educators
    • Experience building partnerships with local organizations and schools
    • Experience creating and conducting a variety of staff development or other relevant training
    • Experience curating, maintaining and marketing collections that support curricular needs
    • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; including ability to deliver presentations
    • Successfully demonstrated ability to work independently while engaging internal and external stakeholders to ensure delivery of required outcomes
    • Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team that is geographically dispersed
    • Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
    • Ability to be flexible and respond to a diverse set of user needs and preferences
    • Strong computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs and e-reader devices

    USD $52,248.00/Yr.
