  • Overview

    Under the supervision of the Director of Online Giving & Direct Mail, the Membership Manager will oversee The New York Public Library’s direct mail and member services programs, and develop new offline strategies to achieve membership goals. Those include growing the Library’s donor base, and engaging, retaining, and upgrading existing donors across membership programs. S/he will be responsible for raising over $3 million and overseeing a budget of over $1 million


    The Membership Manager will work closely with colleagues in Development Operations, Online Giving, Communications, Creative Services, Digital, the Service Bureau, and the Research Libraries.

    Principal Responsibilities


    • Develop and implement a direct mail program strategy that includes donor acquisition, renewal, reinstatement, special appeal, and acknowledgment efforts
    • Develop and implement new direct response strategies to increase net revenue, number of donors, and number of gifts per donor
    • Prepare offline budgets in collaboration with consultants and the Director of Online Giving and Direct Mail
    • Manage member service communications
    • Develop and revise copy for direct mail efforts
    • Develop, review and edit data requests involving complex segmentation and appeal coding for all mailings
    • Oversee benefit fulfillment
    • Support membership-related fundraising and stewardship efforts at Library events
    • Supervise the Development Associate and membership temps and volunteers
    • Facilitate flow of information between DM consultants, Membership office, Systems, and Service Bureau
    • Work cooperatively with staff across Library to create strong donor benefits programs and coordinate overall direct response strategy
    • Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices
    • Performs related duties as required

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, fundraising, or related field;
    • Two or more years of experience with direct mail
    • Experience with nonprofit membership programs
    • A proven track record of achieving fundraising goals
    • Experience managing budgets
    • Deep knowledge of fundraising databases and audience segmentation
    • Excellent writing and editing skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and deal tactfully and effectively with donors, consultants, and Library Management.
    • Proficient in MS Office suite software applications
    • 1-2 years of experience using Raiser’s Edge

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in telemarketing, canvassing, and other fundraising approaches
    • Familiarity with digital marketing campaigns
