  • Overview

    The Adult Learning Centers (ALCs) are the direct service providers of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the Library.  They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, ALCs have taken on the charge to expand ESOL instruction in the Library.


    This position will lead ESOL classes to adult patrons in classes which meet 4-6 hours per week. The instructor will develop and implement lesson plans in alignment with NYPL’s ESOL curriculum, and report student attendance data in a timely manner. Instructors may also support new student registration, and end of cycle post testing.

    Principal Responsibilities

    Working with the Assistant Director and the Hub Manager, hourly instructors will:

    • Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6
    • Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language teaching environment during class-time.
    • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals
    • Assist with the enrollment process to recruit and maintain students
    • Maintain daily attendance records
    • Create weekly lesson plans, to prepare the material and sequence of activities students will do in class each week.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL.
    • Experience teaching adults.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations.
    • Experience administering standardized assessments
    • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning preferred.
    • Ability to work as part of the larger branch library team, demonstrating an understanding of the larger mission of NYPL
    • Ability to communicate simply and courteously with new immigrant library users

    Preferred Qualifications

    • NYS TESOL certification
    • Multilingual candidates preferred (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic).
