  • Overview

    Established in 1970 and located at Fifth Avenue and 40th Street, the Mid-Manhattan Library which also includes spaces for children’s and teen’s, is the largest circulating library in the NYPL system. This library is a vital hub for library patrons in the City and serves as a bridge between our neighborhood libraries and in-depth research library collections. It is currently undergoing a transformational renovation and is temporarily located on the ground floor of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street.


    The Library Services Manager is responsible overseeing building-wide operations, including circulation and customer service through a range of times including nights and weekends. A passion for creating an environment of teamwork that embraces change in an age of technological advances and excellent customer service geared towards building lifelong user relationships with the library is expected.  

    Principal Responsibilities

    • Works closely with the Director and Mid-Manhattan Library unit heads to provide strategic leadership, direction, planning and decision making to the Mid-Manhattan team on all aspects of library administration, including
      • public service, the user experience, collection development & marketing and materials processing;
      • fines and fees handling and budget administration
      • Policy implementation, library facility condition; and
      • staffing and performance management
    • Collaborates with unit heads to support the delivery of customer driven public programs and outreach
    • Partners with the Director to ensure ongoing development of staff to align skills and capabilities with the mission and strategic priorities of the Library
    • Utilizes internal and external metrics to report on key issues to the Director, staff and key stakeholders in order to foster data driven decision making
    • Partners and strategizes with other NYPL departments (administrative, support, and programmatic) to develop and launch new service initiatives and resolve staff & operational issues
    • Collaborates with internal library departments to ensure that the Library is safe, clean and usable for staff and the public
    • In the absence of the Chief Librarian, assumes overall responsibility for the day to day running of the building
    • Participates in library and institution-wide committees or task forces as needed
    • Participates, as appropriate, in the design and implementation of service plans involving the temporary space and post renovation relocation of the library
    • Represents the library at community meetings
    • Develops and reviews customer service plans for the library and serves as the point of escalation and resolution for customer service issues

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree with 5 plus years of demonstrable progressive experience managing a large team in a large urban public library environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, written and presentation skills
    • Successfully demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and assess problems and decisively implement appropriate solutions or recommendations
    • Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects or tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
    • Demonstrated track record of success in improving customer service and workflow processes
    • Strong analytical orientation with demonstrable experience using metrics to drive decision making
    • Experience integrating emerging technologies and social media to bolster the patron experience and collaboration in both, physical and virtual spaces
    • Membership in professional library associations

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Enrollment in Master’s Degree in Library Science program or it’s equivalent within 2 years strongly is preferred
