  • Overview

    A critical component of the NYPL’s Out-Of-School Time (OST) Program is our Enrichment Zones Program which focuses on providing structured homework help to students in grades 1 through 8.  In addition to homework help, students use engaging educational software to supplement their skill-building, and will participate in enrichment activities that address the Common Core Learning Standard in math, literacy, science, and social studies through hands-on exploration and experimentation.


    Enrichment Zone Programming takes place Monday - Thursday 3:00pm - 6:00pm.  Program Coordinators will be scheduled to work up to 19 hours per week, including Monday - Thursday 2:00pm - 6:00pm, alternating Friday afternoons, and team meetings or instructor prep time as required.

    Principal Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Associate Manager of Out of School Time (OST) Programming, the Program Coordinator:

    • Establishes a high-quality Enrichment Zones customized homework help program, under the guidance of the OST Associate Manager, that follows all protocols and procedures created by the OST department  
    • Manages part-time tutors in their daily work with students
    • Responsible for the daily management and logistics of running the program
    • Reviews student progress through diagnostic tools and prepares, engaging, customized plans for participants
    • Participates in ongoing professional development in tutor management, academic content, pedagogy, behavior management, and safety protocols provided by the NYPL and implements these practices in the afterschool program
    • Builds a strong relationship with parents, schools, and library branch staff
    • Performs other related duties as required

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Minimum of three years’ experience teaching K – 12 in a formal and/or informal setting
    • Experience or interest in project-based learning and informal education (our models are very different from traditional classroom teaching)
    • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of educators
    • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for the Library
    • Entrepreneurial spirit: ability to shift gears in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines and wear many different hats
    • Supervisory and/or staff development experience
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Commitment to diversity and inclusion

    • Computer and basic technology skills such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications
    • Must pass a criminal background check

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Education or related field preferred
    • Working knowledge of the NYC Department of Education Common Core Learning Standards preferred
    • Ability to speak foreign languages preferred
