  • Overview

    NYPL Digital is the department responsible for the digital transformation of the Library in order to facilitate the successful transition to the delivery of core patron-facing services through digital platforms. Success will be achieved by the development of an affordable, scalable and achievable long-term plan comprising Infrastructure, Policies, Processes and the management of an appropriately motivated and skilled workforce to guarantee digital Preservation, Discovery and Access to the materials, assets and other resources provided by the Library, to all patrons in accordance with its stated mission and values.


    As a key member of the Digital team, the Scrum Master will work closely and in collaboration with multiple scrum teams, product and UX to deliver the Library’s digital eReading transformational strategy.  Applying best practices, the individual will advocate agile practices and principles while advancing and coaching the teams in the SCRUM adoption and practices. Building high performing scrum teams, the Scrum Master will deliver exceptional products and programs that will delight the Library’s patrons.     Principal Responsibilities

    The passionate and self driven Scrum Master will lead and coach the scrum teams to deliver multiple transformational projects.  The Scrum Master will be adept at delivering complex digital projects through the entire product development life cycle, while motivating and removing impediments for the scrum teams.  Furthermore, creating an environment for high performing teams.


    The main responsibilities of the post are:

    • Lead and facilitate the day to day planning and Scrum ceremonies for multiple Scrum teams including Refinement, Sprint Planning & Close, Demo, Retrospectives, and Daily Stand Ups
    • Partner with Product Owners to effectively manage the product backlog and ensure the team has a shared understanding
    • As a servant leader, support and protect the scrum teams by removing impediments, and create an environment of trust and healthy conflict resolution
    • Coach and mentor the scrum teams to advance agile adoption, foster a self-organizing agile mindset, and create an energetic and highly productive environment
    • Leverage relevant metrics such as team velocity, sprint burndown to support team planning and reporting to stakeholders.
    • Foster an environment of inspect and adapt to drive continuous improvements and high team morale
    • Proactively identify and track risks and issues and develop associated mitigation plans
    • Be willing to fill in gaps within the team wherever necessary to ensure the teams stays on track

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Minimum 3-5 years experience as a Scrum Master and Project Manager in a technology services / digital media organization
    • Experience in delivering digital projects and products
    • Proven track record, and passion, for applying agile principles and practices
    • Solid experience in managing customer facing applications and services (technical lead experience not required)
    • Leadership skills and enthusiastic can-do attitude
    • Relationship building and partnership skills
    • Excellent communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills
    • Excellent project management and time management skills
    • Proven experience balancing multiple priorities and dealing with ambiguity
    • Self-starter, requiring minimal supervision (but not afraid to call for help)
    • Experience working with Atlassian collaboration tools (e.g. Jira)

    Preferred Qualifications

    • PMP and/or CSM (Certified Scrum Master) Certifications strongly preferred
    • Prior work with open source projects is a plus
