    The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is renowned for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its historical collections as well as its commitment to providing free and equal access to its resources and facilities. It houses some 15 million items, among them priceless medieval manuscripts, ancient Japanese scrolls, contemporary novels and poetry, as well as baseball cards, dime novels, and comic books.


    NYPL is seeking a Security Supervisor to oversee the activities of the security officers which provides safety and protects our employees, Library users and assets.

    Principal Responsibilities

    Under the direction of the Security Manager,

    • Supervises the security staff and the operation of security systems, and administers contract guard services as applicable at the assigned location
    • Supervises and trains all library security staff and initiates disciplinary action when necessary
    • Responds to emergencies (fire alarms, bomb scares, burglary alarms, etc.), investigates reports of crimes, and conducts confidential investigations
    • Reviews all security-related reports, and administers records including performance evaluations relating to assigned personnel, and assists in staff selection for specific shifts
    • Maintains all electronic security equipment
    • Meets periodically with building administrators to discuss security-related problems, public relations, and special events planning
    • Enforces compliance by staff and public of Library rules and regulations regarding security
    • May serves as a Fire Safety Director
    • May be assigned to perform related duties at any NYPL facility
    • May be required to respond personally to alarms and or emergencies in other NYPL facilities including emergencies during non-scheduled hours

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management and substantial, successfully demonstrated security supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Ability to work as a liaison between the Library and the NYC Police Department
    • Successfully demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment in emergency situations and to deal tactfully and effectively with the staff and public
    • Successfully demonstrated experience providing instruction in security in a formal classroom setting
    • Substantial knowledge of New York State penal code and local laws
    • Knowledge of Security Guard Act of 1994
    • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including successfully demonstrated ability to produce clear, concise factual reports
    • Valid driver's license and clear driving record

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with personal computers preferred
    • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of the operations of electronic security systems including CCTV, computerized card access, and fire protection systems preferred 
    • Certified New York State security training instructor
    • Fire Safety Director’s License from the NYC Fire Department
