  • Overview

    A critical component of the NYPL’s Out-Of-School Time (OST) Program is our Enrichment Zones Program which focuses on providing structured homework help to students in grades 1 through 8.  In addition to homework help, students use engaging educational software to supplement their skill-building, and will participate in enrichment activities that address the Common Core Learning Standard in math, literacy, science, and social studies through hands-on exploration and experimentation.


    Enrichment Zone Programming takes place Monday - Thursday 3:00pm - 6:00pm.  Tutors will be scheduled to work up to 14 hours per week and will have the choice of working Monday - Thursday, Tuesdays & Thursdays,  or Mondays & Wednesdays.


    Hourly rate is $16.00/hr

    Principal Responsibilities

    The Enrichment Zone Tutor will work under the supervision of an Education Coordinator and will:

    • Work one on one or in small groups with students to provide them with academic tutoring to improve their understanding of math, reading, social studies and/or science, at all levels
    • Create and maintain reports of all tutoring sessions including details of the interaction, achievements, and concerns about the students performance
    • Attend periodic staff meetings for youth evaluation and information exchange among Tutors, Student Advocates, and supervisors
    • Assist with administering assessments and collaborate with staff to analyze scores
    • Create strategies to target areas of concern
    • Use best practices when tutoring students
    • Develop positive relationships with students that foster their academic and personal growth
    • May be assigned to work in other OST sites
    • Performs other duties assigned

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Current enrollment in a Undergraduate degree program at an approved accredited educational institution or a Bachelor’s degree; HS Diploma or equivalent required
    • Experience teaching and/or tutoring in multiple subject areas
    • Effective communication skills in dealing with children, parents, co-workers and supervisors
    • Interest in urban library services
    • Interest in helping children to improve their reading, writing, math, social studies, and science skills
    • Possess a concrete understanding of basic elementary Math, Science, English, History, and Foreign Language concepts
    • Computer and basic technology skills such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Working knowledge of the NYC Department of Education Common Core Learning Standards preferred
    • Ability to speak foreign languages preferred
